This position coordinates and participates in the implementation of services to ensure communication access for students and other campus community members/visitors who are Deaf/hard of hearing. The position will coordinate ASL interpreting, real:time captioning, and notetaking. Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to, assessing the accommodation and communication needs of Deaf and hard of hearing students, participating in outreach and advocacy activities, acting as a sign language interpreter when needed, and supervising staff/contractual interpreters and student notetakers. Examples of Work Performed:Supervises staff and vendor interpreters and notetakers to include performance evaluation and policy compliance:Matches interpreters of appropriate skill level to assignments to ensure accurate communication exchange:Recruits, hires, trains, mentors, and evaluates qualified individuals to serve as sign language interpreters and classroom notetakers:Assesses the quality of services provided by third party captioning agencies:Plans, organizes, schedules, and coordinates interperter/captioning/notetakerservices:Serves as the University's point of contact regarding issues of Deafness, interpreting, captioning, and students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing:Meets with Deaf and hard of hearing students to assess and determine individual modes of communication and communication needs:Discusses, advises, and/or assists Deaf/Hard of Hearing students in the development of self:advocacy skills and provides appropriate referrals to university resources.:Responds to complaints and concerns from students regarding the provision of approved and reasonable accommodations:Meets with prospective Deaf/Hard of Hearing students either on campus or through recruitment efforts sponsored by the Office of Admissions:Serves as campus liason for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community providing training, information, and consultation to students and faculty across campus:Provides direct interpreting services as needed often working in collaboration with other interpreters:Troubleshoots issues that may arise while interpreting in the classroom or during other assignments using independent judgement to ensure access and resolve problems in the moment:Adhere to the Registry of Interpreter's for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct and adhere to professional standards set forth by RID:Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required Essential Functions :Assesses the accommodation and communication needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students :Participates in outreach and advocacy activities :Acts as a sign language interpreter :Supervises staff and vendor employees and interpreters NOTE: Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Minimum Education/Experience Education:Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in psychology, social work, special education or a related field. AND Experience:Three (3) years of experience related to the above described duties. AND Certification: Must hold current certification as an interpreter, either through QA or RID, or other certification recognized by the State of Mississippi. Must be registered or eligible for registration with the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing within 30 days from date of hire.
