Position Title: Director of Indigenous Leadership (P2) Reports to: Vice President, Tribal Lands & Waters Location: This position may work from our Portland, OR office or remotely within our region (must be located in Oregon, Washington, California, or Alaska). Regular travel to Portland and across the region is expected. Starting Salary: $85,000 to $96,000 → Starting salary placement will be based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity. Job Summary The Indigenous Leadership Program Director is responsible for advancing Ecotrust’s mission by supporting Ecotrust programs working with American Indian tribes, Alaska Native villages, and First Nations. This role will support Ecotrust in being a partner that provides technical assistance and resources, identifies opportunities, and builds capacity for Indigenous governments in the areas of conservation, climate resilience, economic development, and relationship building. The ILP Director will also lead the Indigenous Leadership Award program, a year-round program whose focus is to celebrate and uplift Indigenous Leadership in our bioregion from California to Alaska. The program includes identifying and awarding nominees or fellows, as well as hosting a briefing series in collaboration with communications and development teams to elevate Native voices and stories across Ecotrust platforms.The Indigenous Leadership Award has been given to 90 leaders over 30 years since the award was established. Who you are You have direct experience working with Tribes, Alaska Native corporations and First Nations. You are an experienced leader and who is also comfortable working collaboratively within a team. You have experience with fundraising and program development, and have personably, strategically, and respectfully stewarded organizational relationships with Tribes, Alaska Native corporations and First Nations. You are a thought leader whose experience, as well as historical and cultural knowledge resonates with a commitment to building the capacity of Indigenous leaders, their Tribes and First Nations. Primary Duties and Responsibilities (The activities listed below represent the core functions of this position.) Develop organizational strategic objectives. Sustain, develop and implement long term fund development. In collaboration with the Development team, raise an annual budget that is in line with the needs of the program. Working with Tribes and Alaska Native Corporations. Conduct culturally informed trainings and give presentations to and for Tribes, Alaska Native Villages and First Nations; Identify opportunities for Ecotrust programs to work with Tribes, Alaska Native villages, and First Nations; Build relationships, partnerships, funding opportunities with Indigenous communities, Native and non-Native organizations, and others; Fundraise from foundations, corporations, individuals, Tribes, as well as state and federal agencies to support Ecotrust’s work with Indigenous communities; Work with the Communications, Development, Events team, and other staff or contractors to promote, plan and execute the Indigenous Leadership Award program and gala event. Project manage related Indigenous leadership activities, such as fellowships, trainings, and interview series; Develop, strengthen, and maintain relationships with Indigenous Leadership Awardees, historic and contemporary, with a focus in conducting qualitative research about Indigenous leadership to support program development and growth. Create an active network of the Indigenous Leadership Award recipients and identify opportunities to steward them alongside Ecotrust’s existing and future work; ideate and implement new programming as relevant or needed Supervise the Indigenous Leadership Award Project Manager (currently vacant) Responsibilities and tasks outlined in this document are not exhaustive and may change as determined by the needs of the organization or employee. A candidate will be assessed on their ability to successfully fulfill or quickly learn these functions. 8+ years of experience in navigating tribal governments, working closely with Indigenous communities and/or collaborating with Native and Indigenous leaders within Ecotrust’s region of Northern CA, OR, WA and Southeast AK. Historic, cultural and current knowledge of Tribes, First Nations, Alaska Native Corporations and related protocols in Ecotrust’s service area; Knowledge of and network connections with organizations in Ecotrust’s service area who partner with or support Tribes or Native-led organizations; Experience fundraising to support an annual program budget and long term funding goals. 3+ years’ experience supervising people in a way that acknowledges differentials in power, recognizes strengths, encourages confidence, supports growth, and holds staff accountable to standards and achieving collective goals. This position manages at least one person. Event planning, including but not limited to online programming , banquets, award ceremonies. Exceptional interpersonal skills. Ability to manage staff and contractors to support programming Able to quickly develop rapport, and maintain long-term relationships with elected and community leaders Indigenous communities. Experience in public speaking, training and curriculum development High-level organizational skills. Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to prepare and deliver concise, understandable, and effective presentations to a wide audience, which includes community partners, staff, and board; Ability to work within a complex organizational ecosystem with multiple, intersecting teams, departments, and programs; Passionate and knowledgeable about justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) and how to apply JEDI principles into programs and initiatives. Ability to examine and reflect on your own racial/ethnic biases or prejudices and understand how that may impact your work. Familiarity or fluency with a range of communication and project management tools, including Microsoft Suite, slack, Asana, Google Suite, and/or Zoom. Other Useful Qualifications (The items listed below represent qualifications that are desirable in a candidate, but are not required. Some of these may be gained through professional development and coaching once on board.) A Bachelor’s degree or master’s degree, with a background in areas of study that include Indigenous Studies, tribal governance, Indian law, etc. You have worked with Indigenous elders and/or youth in a Tribe or an urban Indian organization. Experience running a multi-faceted year round program Involvement in conducting trainings, developing curriculum, leading groups. Experience managing staff and contractors Experience integrating equity, belonging, and/or anti-oppressive practices into strategies Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop strong and trusting relationships with people across a diverse spectrum of identities Additional Information This is a full-time, exempt position. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States. For the past several years, Ecotrust has also offered staff a four day work week June 1 - August 31 with 100% pay along with a paid winter recess the last week of the year. Most benefits are either available on your first day as an employee or in your first full month of employment. This includes accrued vacation and sick leave, as well as retirement plan contributions and healthcare. At the discretion of Ecotrust, relocation expenses may be reimbursed to the selected candidate. Working conditions: Flexible, hybrid schedule: remote (from home or suitable work space) and in-office in Southeast Portland (open cubicles). Long periods of time spent at a computer. Engage in regular communication in person as well as through electronic channels such as email, Slack, and Zoom. Travel required for the job includes regular visits to the Portland office (approximately quarterly for remote staff, regularly for Portland-based staff) and throughout the Ecotrust region as needed and at Ecotrust’s expense.
