A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL As a Direct Support Professional with our human services nonprofit, you are responsible for attending to the daily needs of individuals with disabilities while fostering increased independence and self-determination through a person-centered approach. You start each shift by checking in with the individuals you are working with for the day. You greet them warmly and assist them with any personal care needs they may have, ensuring that they present themselves in a culturally valued, image-enhancing way. In this day habilitation role, you provide support in community settings, connecting participants to community resources and community members to facilitate community integration. This might include teaching a participant how to use public transportation, assisting with opening a bank account or identifying recreational activities in the community that meet an individual's interests. Using your people skills, you also teach socialization skills and activities of daily living, including but not limited to self-awareness and human development, menu planning, and money management skills. Some days you assist individuals with personal hygiene as needed and administer and document individual medications as prescribed by a physician. Additionally, you transport individuals to and from community activities, job-related activities, and other activities as required. You provide opportunities for leisure time activities and foster independence in the choice and participation of those activities. Throughout your shift as a caregiver, you ensure participant safety and comply with program standards for staff coverage. You provide ongoing support, guidance, role modeling, and supervision to participants. You also provide a supportive environment that includes opportunities for participants to determine personal preferences for daily schedules and routines. At the end of each shift, you complete all necessary documentation. You also participate in core day habilitation training and maintain certification of required training, including CPR, First Aid, MAP, and Crisis Prevention Intervention. Overall, your role as a caregiver is to ensure that participants are treated with dignity and respect in accordance with ESRI's Human Rights Policy. You maintain a high level of professionalism and function as an ambassador for Easterseals RI, always remaining alert and ensuring a clean, safe, and integrated environment for participants. QUALIFICATIONS FOR A DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL High school diploma Valid driver's license Reliable, insured, and registered vehicle that may be required to transport clients with disabilities Proficient in Microsoft Suite It would be great for this day habilitation position to have more than 2 years of related experience. A bachelor's or associate's degree in social work or a related field is preferred. This caregiver position requires excellent communication and organizational skills.
